SPEND SUMMER’S TWILIGHT AT LONG ISLAND LIGHTHOUSES

This blog was originally published in August of 2013; we have updated it to reflect the most current and accurate information possible.

Want to enjoy summer twilight like never before?

Visit one of Long Island’s top lighthouses!

No trip to Long Island would be complete without checking out some of the area’s awe-inspiring lighthouses.

These are some of our personal favorites:

MONTAUK POINT LIGHTHOUSE

2000 Montauk Highway, Montauk, New York

Montauk Point Lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse in New York.

It was authorized by the Second Congress under President George Washington in 1792 and has remained a captivating Long Island landmark for over two centuries.

This lighthouse was named a National Historic Landmark in March 2012 and now serves as a one-of-a-kind Long Island destination. Visitors of all ages are sure to enjoy the pristine beauty of Montauk Point Lighthouse, along with the building’s distinct structure, 137 iron steps and other unique details that have made it a popular tourist destination for years.

CONEY ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE

4750 Beach 47th St., Brooklyn, New York

Did you know that Brooklyn has its own lighthouse? That’s right – Coney Island Lighthouse, a distinguished lighthouse that is located on Norton’s Point.

Coney Island Lighthouse was constructed in 1890 and remained active until 2003. Today, it serves as a stunning landmark on the westernmost portion of Coney Island and represents a can’t-miss lighthouse for Long Island residents and visitors alike.

EXECUTION ROCKS LIGHTHOUSE

Mamaroneck, New York

Execution Rocks Lighthouse is located on the border of New Rochelle and Sands Point. It boasts a rich history and remains in use today, too.

This lighthouse features a light that flashes every 10 seconds to help guide ships to safety. Also, the lighthouse stands 55 feet tall and is a must-visit for those who appreciate the beauty and majesty of traditional Long Island lighthouses.

STEPPING STONES LIGHTHOUSE

Long Island Sound, North Hempstead, New York

Built in 1876, Stepping Stones Lighthouse originally was used to warn mariners about shoal and rocks that extend into Long Island Sound northward from Kings Point. Now, the lighthouse functions as a navigational beacon and an outstanding historic landmark.

You can view Stepping Stones Lighthouse from many vantage points across Long Island Sound. In addition, this Victorian-style lighthouse consists of red brick that makes it easy to see from a distance.
