After that, the orchestra will play in Queens, Central Park, the College of Staten Island CUNY, and Van Cortlandt Park.
CELEBRATE BROOKLYN! BENEFIT CONCERTS
Various, Starting at July 11
This event encompasses a range of musical, cultural, and artistic events. First sprouting as a fundraising event to support Prospect Park, it’s today a popular summer event. July’s roster includes Belle & Sebastian and Yo La Tengo, Barenaked Ladies, Ben Folds, and Beck. Ticket prices vary for each show.
SUMMER RESTAURANT WEEK
July 16-August 10
More than 270 restaurants will offer some excellent cuisine at special discounts, starting July 16. Three-course, prix-fixe lunches will be sold at some spots for only $24, while other places will offer dinner for a reasonable $35. Participating restaurants include A Voce, Ben and Jack’s Steakhouse, and Dovetail, among others. Keep an eye on the official website for more information, because this popular event sells out quickly.
SHAKESPEARE IN THE PARK
This isn’t your everyday Shakespeare in the Park. Stars such as Meryl Streep and Denzel Washington have taken the stage here and wowed audiences with their takes on Shakespeare. Audiences are treated to open-air performances at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. Shakespeare in the Park has already kicked off with Comedy of Errors until June 30. After that, Love’s Labour’s Lost will run until from July 23 to August 18.
Soak in New York’s diversity at this celebration of French independence. Revelers will get to snack on delicious crepes and éclairs or pair wines with cheeses. Kids can get their faces painted and also make their own crafts, while accordion players and can-can dancers will keep things lively. Be sure to enter the prize drawing, for the festival is known for giving away fabulous prizes, ranging from travel items to health and wellness products.
CITY OF WATER DAY
Saturday, July 20
Water activities abound during this fun-filled H2O celebration. The events will be held in two spots: Liberty State Park in Jersey City and Governors Island, where visitors can go kayaking, canoeing, or boating for free. Historical boat tours of the harbor are offered for guests who sign up in advance. Those who want to be near the water but don’t want to get wet can enjoy fishing or biking, while others can enjoy food and live music.
Baseball games and summer fit like a hand in glove. The Mets will play a string of home games at the beginning and end of July, giving you plenty of chances to root them on at Citi Field. Grab some grub from Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs and settle in for an exciting game.
