It’s winter time in New York, which means lots of snow, shoveling the driveway, being cold, and staying indoors. The winter blues can creep in with so much indoor time and sit around, making the season seem never-ending.

Just over two hours from Long Island, the Lakota Wolf Preserve offers visitors a chance to get an educational view of some of the most fascinating animals in our country.
From various species of wolves, foxes, bobcats and more, the Preserve gives you the chance to watch these animals in their natural habitat. You can book educational tours or take a private guided photography tour to get some of your own shots of the habitat and the animals.
Especially beautiful during winter, the Preserve is run by two wolf enthusiasts who wanted a safe place for these animals, whose habitats are often at risk.
WETHERSFIELD, CONNECTICUT
At around 2 and ½ hours from Long Island, Wethersfield is the perfect winter town for a relaxing day trip. Enjoy the snow and quaint buildings, many of which have history leading all the way back to the original 13 colonies.
Take a walk through the downtown area, or head to the Congregational church where George Washington once worshiped.
You can visit the art and history museums, head to some of the stores in the shopkeeper’s village, or sit down at one of the many local Italian eateries and enjoy a hearty meal.
GREAT BARRINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS
Just over 3 hours from Long Island, Great Barrington is in the beautiful Berkshires, offering visitors plenty of gorgeous views during the winter months, not to mention plenty to do.
Main Street is the hub of Great Barrington, with shops, historic locations, and eateries, most notably Alice’s Restaurant, which was the inspiration for the great Arlo Guthrie folk song of the same name.
You can also visit the W.E.B. Du Bois home and surrounding trails, or take a guided tour.
