Hot New Destination for Your Brooklyn Limo
This just in - Brooklyn's new, 18,000-seat Barclays Center arena was officially opened on September 21st, 2012. The ribbon cutting on the Brooklyn Nets' new home was the first major-league sports team to come to the area in several decades. We've compiled a few facts and figures on the controversial, new land mark staking a claim on the Brooklyn skyline:
The Building
Barclays Center Arena is built from 12,000 steel panels of varying size and shape, specially designed to accommodate the arena's curving exterior. Large windows give pedestrians a glimpse of the Nets' practices, fan seating and the scoreboard, allowing free updates on the game.
The Oculus
The Oculus is a term used to describe an unusual that hangs over the public plaza out front. The sphere is larger than a basketball court and contains a 3,000 square foot screen that could display video feeds. It's been rumored that live feeds of surrounding area could be frequently shown inside the Oculus.
The Interior
Despite the incredibly eccentric exterior, the inside's decor is much more quiet, featuring steep rows of black seating. "This will give it fantastic acoustics. It will be incredibly loud. It will give the Nets a wonderful home court advantage," architect Gregg Pasquarelli said. Between the specially-designed acoustics and the trademark loud nature of your average New Yorker, we might almost feel a little bad for the Nets' future opponents.
Jay-Z
As if we needed another reason to start getting pumped for Barclays Center Arena, nativeBrooklyn resident Jay-Z, rapper Shawn Carter is part owner of the Nets and responsible for the design of the teams' logo. Jay-Z is scheduled to perform a week of sold-out shows to celebrate the arena's opening, which begin September 28th. While competition for tickets was fierce, Jay-Z is just the beginning of a thrilling line-up of pop music, sports and classic rock scheduled for fall.
Go Brooklyn
Few people outside the Long Island and NYC region realize just how badly Brooklyn's needed a sports team. Though the city's well-known for their sports, including the Yankees, Mets, Jets and more - Brooklyn hasn't had a team to call their own since the late 1950's, over 50 years. We can't help but feel a little proud that the region will once more host the entertainment and economic growth associated with a major-league sports team of their very own.
Community Opposition
While Friday's opening ceremony was overall a joyous event, the event was also attended by a storm of angry protesters. Affordable housing units had been promised with construction of the arena, and the current plan is to begin construction in December. While few major buildings are built without some opposition, Barclays Arena's nearly 11-year planning and construction history has been unusually turbulent.
